Player's Review
"Fight your way through dungeons and magical wastelands. Incredible animated dragons, magic potions and weapons to collect. Amazing spells now you can fly, transform, destroy, protect and advance through the ranks of wizardry.
You hesitate as you enter the magical Kingdom - you may never come back. All sorts of horrors lurk in the damp darkness of the eerie dungeons. The old town seems strangely deserted, but not for long. You must work hard to conquer the myriad of servants of the evil DragonLord, but it can be done..."
One of Codemasters higher budget releases at £4.99 containing two tapes. The first has two versions of the game. The Standard game and expert game on side b. The second tape contains the level data. The Standard game lets you practice the first three levels. If you die you can start on which ever you died on. On Expert you will go right back tot he biggening upon death but you get to play all the levels.
Your quest is to battle through four magical lands to eventually reach and slay the dragon. To aid in your quest you collect magical powers as you slay any enemies in your way. After accumulating magic you unlock spells. The more powerful speels require more magic. Some strategy is needed for when to use them as you can be left high and dry when you need an ability most, most notably at the levels end boss. You only get one life which can be instantly taken from you by falling down a hole or colliding with a powerful enemy. It is possible to collect a resurrection spell shown as the CodeMasters logo. Each time you complete a level you level up and gain access to some more powerful spells needed for the hazards ahead.
Overall, this is a nice action platformer and one of the better games from Codemasters on the C64 but it's not without it's quirks and annoyances. The biggest threat to you are the holes in your path and you need to find a way over them. You cant jump diagonally so need to get some hight and fall past the hole. Some enemies can be difficult to get away from and drain your energy fast.
The longplay firstly shows the standard game of three levels followed by the Expert game. Each has there own title tune and you get the bad ending after completing the standard game. n the last level there are section where it wants you to jump on raised shields to get across but i found it way to fiddly and annoying to pull off so just farmed enemies for the fling ability. I was hoping to defeat the dragon without spells at the end but didn't have the energy to stay alive so it was a quick battle. I show a quick death at the end.
