Player's Review

"FANTASTIC VALUE - This cassette contains 3 exciting arcade games – all made with the famous Games Creator. What’s more – the actual Games Creator program is included to make your own great games with."

Note that this is not a tutorial on how to use the Game Maker but rather just showing the three simple games included as a demonstration. I don't have the imagination to create a game from scratch or the gfx design skills to make something in the background and sprite editor.

When you first load the editor, it includes the game Bouncer. A simple game where you run and jump the platforms, dodging enemies while jumping to reach the key which ends the level. Nothing much more to it than that. The game is endless and allows you to keep collecting the key from the same spot for score. In each level the enemies speed up and the player character even slows down but that is all that changes between levels.

All three games have largely the same mechanics. In hawk Patrol you need to collect the eggs that fall from the sky and destroy all the planes as they appear whilst dodging the tank and missile fire. Completing the level loops the same level only this time with faster enemies. Snake Pit is the same but your player is constantly moving in the direction set. Move around the maze to the exit whilst dodging enemies. Completing the level loops it with faster enemies.

The longplay shows playing all three games. After finishing one I load the next one on the tape. You cant save your creation as a ready to run game and need to load them into the editor each time. I show a couple of screens of the editor within each game and even make some simple changes to make the game easier or harder mainly to show a glimpse of available options.

Overall, this is a very simplistic game creator compared to what came later with the lies of Shoot Em Up Construction kit, 3D Construction kit and even those racing and pinball construction kits to a limited degree. But for 1984, it gave you a system where you can learn to make gfx and move them around the screen, setting up different rules for them essentially learning the very basics of putting a game together. By the time put it out in 1987 it wasn't that interesting but I guess still useful if you wanted a simple sprite editor to test your design skills with.

Mastertronic shockingly used it to release some commercial games and years later knowing what games used it .. mind blown and it certainly explains away some of the crappiest games on C64. https://mastertronic.co.uk/tag/the-games-creator/
