Player's Review

"You've heard about PREDATOR, the Schwarzenegger film - now you can play the leading role. Take a crack commando unit into the South American jungle to rescue a bunch of trapped diplomats. Should be easy enough...so it would be, if it weren't for the mysterious alien who keeps on taking out your men."

Often referred to as the Fast version, the EU/UK release seems rushed and unfinished compared to the US version. I am not sure on when each version was specifically released so this could be an early version or a heavily stripped down version for tape. The game plays slightly differently but is ultimately not completable due to a bug with the final rope pulling that should lift the tree. The intro is much shorter and the music sounds like a translated version from the spectrum.

The game has four levels. The first two involve running through the jungle, killing enemy soldiers and avoiding the predator laser weapon. Along the way you will pass by your fellow soldiers laying on the ground leaving their weapons behind for you to utilise. In levels 3 and 4, you are being stalked by the Predator. There is mud to hide in, but this game mechanic doesn't seem to work in a useful way. If you stand still, the predator cant see you and the targeting laser will pass you by....usually! At the end of level 3, the mechanic is flat out broken and you get shot anyway. If you make any movement at all, you are spotted. If you do nothing, you quickly drown in the mud. Just don't shoot at the predator else he will instantly fire back a death shot. The predator wants to fight you in hand to hand combat.

There is a fire you can sit at at the start of level 4, but I couldn't notice if it did anything useful. At the end of the level, you need to fight the predator to make him run away. At which point you should set up the trap and drop the tree on him when he comes back to win the game, but the devs didn't care to check if this mechanic worked!

There are no collectable crates in this version so no special items like invincibility or extra grenades. I didn't check if you could collect ammo from bodies like on the Spectrum but..no. Being faster makes the levels shorter although it also means you can die quicker as enemies just suddenly appear and fire on the screen. Overall this version should be avoided as its not completable and the gameplay is not as ... refined as the US release.
