"Experience high-octane driving thrills with 'Crash City Mayhem'. Blaze your way through the city streets and crush an evil syndicate of terrorists!"
One of the larger eShop games but a small game overall. Very much an arcade like experience that you can play in short bursts. There are only six levels that need to be completed within a time limit. The game gives the illusion of being a free roam racer but the maps are actually quite restrictive with barriers everywhere although there are many shortcuts for some variety.
Six levels wont take to long to complete but for re-playability you get to complete them all again at multiple difficulty levels with each adding more restrictions or requirements. The credits roll after completing episode 6 but there are still cars and items to unlock by completing all difficulty levels. There is a coin system where you get awards for speed and, jumps, crashes and others that can be collected and you need at least three golds to get the unlock for that level. Actually this isn't entirely clear as the unlocks seemed to come naturally but it wasn't until near the end I noticed some were missing and I guess maybe not all need three golds.
The game is not overly difficult. Time is generous, crashing doesnt hurt too much and the levels are quite linier. The only exception is the final difficulty that requires dealing no environmental damage (Damage to your own vehicle is fine). Controls might be the only real obstacle as they can feel quite floaty and the brakes can over react spinning the vehicle but it is also quite vehicle dependant so choosing gone you are comfortable with and its not to bad. The faster ones are the most difficult to control although there are tuning settings which can help.
Overall it's not a bad game especially if you are a fan of the Runabout series of games. It goes on a bit too long with repeated levels but at least there are in game rewards for doing so. The video runs longer than it should have due to me not paying attention and I had to replay some levels for the unlocks. I had gotten to far in to start over,
Due to the weird way the levels are played it might look odd when trying to follow the story. I show all cutscenes for the first time the level is played and skip them when replayed. However, I show the final legendary run as complete so you can easily follow that one along. After the credits have rolled for the final time I replay three levels for the missing unlocks. There is no final overall credit roll which kind of sux.
