Player's Review
"DUKE NUKEM ADVANCE - Attack all those that come in your way using 9 weapons from shrink rays to quad shotguns. Alien scientists have taken control of the top-secret Area 51 military base, and are plotting to overthrow Earth! But not if Duke can stop them. Armed with alien-busting weapons, his kick-butt attitude, and using the aliens' own transporters, Duke takes the battle to four unique locations around the world. Oh, and rescues a few babes along the way. Hail to the king, baby! Fight alien menaces through 19 diverse levels including Area 51, Australia and the pyramids of Egypt."
Porting the original Duke Nukem 3D to the Game Boy Advance was probably way to ambitious for the little handheld so a whole new Duke adventure was developed by Torus Games utilising the Southpaw engine as also used in Doom II. This a new game with all new levels to explore.
There are 19 levels all of which are quite small so not to difficult too navigate and memorise. The levels are mostly flat like doom with elevator and stairs but no Jetpack or the need for looking up and down (although you can if you want). Most of the familiar weapons are here with a couple of differences. Original sounds are used and many familiar enemies and textures for the levels ensures you are immersed in dukes world. A new grey alien enemy shakes things up with the ability to raise the dead so its important to take these out first if you run into them. Levels are broken up with a little bit of dialogue to help with given a reason for being where you are. They can slow the pace of the game though.
Overall, it's another good entry into the world of first person shooters on the Gameboy Advance. Doom Ii was good, but I think this one came out better as it didn't have to make any concessions recreating the original levels. The game moves at a nice pace and you can circle strafe your enemies as well as jumping when needing to hit some higher targets but weapon selection can be a little cumbersome. Of course a few classic level bugs slip through so some secrets don't register or are not collectable without cheating in the Egypt levels.
