Player's Review
"Play the Fastest, Hairiest game with Garfield and his friends!"
The game started life as a mobile karting game before being ported to the 3DS and still retains its coin system which would have utilised real life money on mobile, but instead collected around the track on 3DS. Thew game was later ported to PC/Steam with some additional objectives.
The game is fairly simple not just in its looks but as well as how it plays. At the start, you select from three difficulties 50cc, 100cc, 150cc and within each are four championships consisting of four tracks each. in 150cc you have to start from the first championship. in the others the second is already opened but you still have to play them all anyway if you want to unlock all championships. After choosing a race, you get to choose from two characters and cars. Others will get unlocked as you complete championships. Spoilers and hats are also available and can effect the cars stats. Ideally you match them all up to the character based on the colour of each part but it doesnt always work out for the best that way. Finally, you can purchase a boost with any coins you have which have varied effects although you wont likely need any of them.
Once the racing start, you have just three laps to complete whilst avoiding the other karts whilst utilising any powerups obtained from the sweets. Each course will have a shortcut somewhere but may need the spring powerup to reach. The Ai racers can behave oddly in that is one race you may leave them in the dust and the next one of them will leave you in the dust with no hope of catching even if you have a fully upgraded car. Awards are received after completing each championship and can be a character, car, spoiler or hat. The big issue is that it is all random and you might have to play the championships multiple times before you get the character or car drop you want. Time trials offer an award after each attempt but does not seem to drop characters or cars.
Overall, the game isn't great. On many tracks the game can lag massively causing you problems with steering and there are cases where you can clip right through the scenery. I cant say its a well made game but the lack of clear objectives for unlocking everything and the random awards really drag this game out and its just not that enjoyable to keep going back to.
The longplay goes through each championship in each difficulty but its wasn't enough to unlock all characters. There is some replaying of championships and some time trials to try and help things along but really, you have seen everything in the first hour of video and the rest is just grinding for parts. I kept going hopefully to get Garfield's car and complete it but it just wasn't to be. A cheat is listed at gamefaq for a Super Garfield after getting all characters but it doesnt work. I'm guessing you need to complete Garfield's car first.
The game really didn't want to give me all the cars and made me wait for the last characters. I could have tried to do a better job of managing the rng with savestates (award chosen when crossing the line) to help speed things up but it still selective on what it wants to drop. Completing the time trials doesnt do anything other than offer a lot of coins for the medal earned and only offered awards already owned.
