Player's Review
"TAXI work prehistoric style. Our hero is flying around on board his pedal powered taxi, which is really a crate (a design years ahead of its time, apparently!) Your task is to help our prehistoric cabby get his woman. She is very demanding and very possessive, as most cave-babes are, and she always wants something new (washing machine, vacuum cleaners and gems), you know all those little household items that were so handy back in the stone age. The only way our hero can give her these things is to work like a nutter caveman cabby."
UGH is reminiscent of an old game like Space Taxi where you ferry a passenger from platform to platform within time/energy limit whilst avoiding various obstacles. The game is set in Jurassic era where you ferry the cave folk around whilst avoiding angry dino's and birds. The game is fairly simplistic fitting on a single disk taking place over 65 levels. Every screen uses the same tile set in different positions which does make the game feel a bit monotonous after a while but at least there are level codes to resume from if you don't care to much about score.
I previously recorded the C64 game and whilst it had some issues, I feel that version is a bit more forgiving with collision detection. In that game I could often slide around the ground into place but in the Amiga game, just getting near a wall is asking for trouble and you cant land just on the edge. At least there were no broken levels encountered. Whilst there is a perceived time limit as your energy ticks down while landed, you can easily replenish it by dropping the rock on the tree and collecting fruit for more energy. You an only do this a few times before the tree falls asleep but there is more than enough to get you through a stage. You can really take your time without pressure and as long as you don't accidently drown passengers you should be fine as some levels do have a limited amount. The rock can also be dropped on the dinos and birds and the dino does get knocked out for a reasonable amount of time unlike the c64 game.
Overall, its a nicely done game but can go on a bit to long. Some levels are over quickly and others can be real tricky as you have to be fairly light handed at the control else you risk crashing especially in diagonal areas. There's a sleeping dino that mess with your movement and especially the rain levels can be hazardous as you fight the wind. A couple of levels have no food trees so you need to be very precise with movements to conserve energy.
