Player's Review
"Puggsy is no ordinary game. Using the unique system of Total Object Interaction (TOI), you have to guide Puggsy through some of the best puzzles and most frantic arcade action ever seen in his quest to retrieve his stolen spaceship. Incorporating graphic techniques never seen before, fantastic gameplay plus a complete Junior section for the younger player, Puggsy is destined to become the next world-wide smash hit!"
Puggy was originaly released for the Mega-Drive in 1993 followed by a further improved game for the Mega-CD. It saw a conversion to the Amiga in 1994. A SNES version was developed but canned before release. The Puggsy character started out as an Amiga demo shown to Psygnosis called Puggs in Space.
You control a Space Hopper that has crash landed and needs to get his ship back from the Raccoons. There are many levels split up over themed areas as well as many hidden levels to find. The levels are all fairly short and simple with a little puzzle solving. Many levels have objects like guns, coins, glasses, shoes, ducks and while not all of them are instantly useful, they may be used for extra score by taking them tot he end of the level. Some objects may be used to interreact with other objects or just used to help boost you up a platform by stacking them. All the objects have a level of physics to them so throwing them or stacking badly can effect how they move and how they interreact with each other. It 's a workable system on the mega drive with its three buttons but trying to manage it on a single button joystick with space bar for pickup/drop it can be a real pain at time as I often need to drop an item before I can chose to raise or lower it and the physics can go crazy sometimes. Getting hit by an enemy is an instant loss of a life. new lives can be found by taking an hearts found into the exit. Collecting the glasses adds an additional hit point and the shoes awards extra speed and jump height as well as an additional hit point.
The longplay goes through all levels as they appear. If a level has two doors I will replay those levels and then show the secret rooms they open before continuing on the main path. I leave the last two secret areas in the initial run so that the Normal ending is shown. Following completion I go back to the Hidden Room and show the cheat mode which awards infinite lives and turns you green before moving on to unlocking the remaining two secret areas before fighting the final boss again and showing the bonus ending. The password system appears to have glitches and will not show me a new password for everything unlocked. Pressing B or P on the map screen should display it but nothing and I tried all keys (not the fault of the cheat). Incidentally pressing C shows you which bosses have been defeated.
The only notable difference from the Mega-Drive game I noticed gameplay wise was that here you can play right up to the final level before it tells you that you cant progress to the final boss unless you have beaten all the previous ones. In the original you will get blocked before the docks if you haven't beaten the previous ones yet. There was also an oddity (maybe bug) when completing Darkskull castle as itt has two doors but taking either one will open both paths saving a replay.
Overall, it's not a bad game but isn't without its issues. For 1994, its not the best developed game and runs a bit slower on an A500 class machine. It is being played on an A1200 here for a little extra boost but some levels have very severe slowdowns in some areas for no apparent reason. All the original levels and gameplay are here in this conversion but targeting the A500 hardware the number of colours have taken a notable hit as well missing backgrounds. The developers probably should have targeted the A1200 AGA for a near perfect conversion . Once the main game has loaded, individual level loading time is not to bad. Disk swapping is minimal as the levels seem to be stored in in a sensible sequential manor. I've painstakingly cut most of the dead air loading time out saving around 30 mins from the recording.
As a bonus I have added as a secondary download the Puggs in Space animation that introduced Puggsy.
