Player's Review

"Get punchin and kickin' with smashing follow up to the hugely successful Street Fighter II games.
For two years they have reigned supreme - twelve of the most gifted fighters from across the world. Now they must step aside to meet the new challengers: Cammy, Dee Jay T. Hawk and Fei Long. New characters. Enhanced moves and fighting techniques. More battle locations. Advanced battle action."

It's been four years since the original Street Fighter II hit the Amiga to great acclaim but not that greato f a game when you compare it to any other version. US Gold are back to give it another shot with Freestyle at the helm. Suer Street Fighter II released in versions for the A500 class Amigas and an AGA A1200 version. The CD32 version was thought to have been produced but not released as it was previewed in the magazines of the time. The AGA game is being played here and comes on seven disks. Thankfully it also comes equipped with a HD installer so no disk swapping to disrupt play.

The longplay shows three plays with different characters and different settings to show the effects on gameplay. The speed settings and pal/ntsc switch are only available in the AGA game. Compared to the previous game, the moves are much easier to pull off although still some tricky ones to figure out. You can choose between one, two and six buttons to suit your playstyle. two is more than enough for me and I still end up button mashing when on the defensive. The first play is played with default settings and the game does up the difficulty upon completion ready for the next play. For the second play I speed the game up a bit and enable supermode which puts you against all fighters sequentially including your clone without any bonus rounds, not helpful for scoring if it matters. The third is back in normal mode so that I don't have to fight everyone running at max speed and difficulty.

Overall, you can see the developers have paid more attention to how the console games play to bring a more faithful game to the Amiga. In many ways it is better than the previous game but in some ways a little worse. The original had large and quite detailed characters but they have lost some weight for this game. The overall number of colours is limited leaving you wondering what AGA is being used for in this game. The backgrounds are detailed and slightly animated but lack of colours make them look off compared to the previous game. Overall presentation is a little lacking on the title screen and fighter menu but once in game I think we have a better fighting game. I am not sure if it's a bug or not but character colour palettes and portraits seem the wrong way around between player one and two for some of them. It may have looked better being more zoomed in and less widescreen like the console games. There are a lot of missing frames on the fighter animations which leaves an overall impression of not being the amiga Street Fighter II game it could have been.

US Gold will try another time in 1996 with Street Fighter II Turbo which is AGA only and requires a HD installation. Maybe they will have finally cracked it and made a great amiga conversion, only time will tell.
