"VIRTUAL TELEVISION - IT'S REALITY'S WORST NIGHTMARE!
"Hi! I'm your MegaHost... Lance Boyle! I'm here to tell you that YOU (yes, YOU) have been targeted to star in the world's top-rated TV show of all time. People stop whatever they're doing to watch MEGARACE! They can't fight it. And MEGARACE wants YOU!
Here's the deal. You know those punk highway gangs, the ones who really think they rule the road. Don't you just hate those slimeballs? Well, VWBT is giving YOU the chance to do something about them! We have 16 amazing race-tracks in 5 totally different virtual environments. We have cars you'd sell your soul to own and we have exclusive contracts with 5, yes I said 5, vicious speed gangs. Believe me, you don't ever want to meet these guys I did, and I still feel sick!
In each MEGARACE the Enforcer that's you tries to get past the gang, catch up with their boss and eliminate him. The tracks feature a terrifying selection of symbols which cause things like speeding up, slowing up, and maybe even blowing up! And that's exactly what you need to keep the Thrillometer up in the red, baby, so you've gotta slam those punks into the sidewall every chance you get.
You don't have the car; we'll give you the car. You don't want to get arrested for taking the law into your own hands; it's not a problem because it ain't real! It's a whole lot better than real, baby: it's Virtual Television, reality's worst nightmare!" So real, it's unreal!"
MegaRace is racing game that makes use of full motion video for it's tracks. They might look a bit tacky now but it made quite the impression when it released. Wipeout wasn't quite here yet. The game has a futuristic setting and is a bit like the Running Man with its TV home viewing format and Smash tv but in cars. However it is all virtual so no lives are lost.
You start off with the three cars each with slightly different specs and the others are unlocked when you beat the opponents driving them. there are fourteen tracks with another two being a bonus round and last chance race which you get if you fail to clear all the opponents on a track. Each car has a standard weapon which can be upgraded by collecting icons on the track. You can choose to smash up your opponents on the side walls or shoot them but you need to keep an eye on energy levels to do that as well as making sure to hit every turbo boost to keep up with the cars. Try to avoid all the dark/negative icons which can reduce speed, steal energy and disable weapons amongst others.
The longplay is being played on hard difficulty. This makes for some challenging races as there are more negative icons on the tracks and the cars can take more damage and quite often winning with only seconds to spare. Winning can mean finding just the right vehicle that will allow you to make it through. Overall this was one of the great releases of 1994 although it way not stand up to well today. The only real annoyance is the collision detection for the icons dont always seem to line up with the video which can cause some problems.
There is a lot of fmv introducing the game and the race setting by Lance Boyle and it can get a bit annoying after a while as at least at the start of the game they go on for longer then the races themselves.
