" Hey lucky fella! Welcome to MegaRace 2, Virtual World Broadcast IV's hottest game show starring yours truly, Lance Boyle, the annoying host with the most. Get ready to race, 'cause you're up next! The rules are simple: Drive real fast. Blow away the other guys before they blast you. You win, you live to race again. You lose...you're a total loser! Before you have time to scream, we'll strap you into an incredible set of wheels and send you off on... THE RACE OF YOUR LIFE- FOR YOUR LIFE!
Seven bloodthirsty opponents challenge you in this lightning-fast arcade racing game. Choose one of many futuristic vehicles and cruise through multi-path track environments all incredibly rendered in 3-D. Each amazing track-some literally out of this world-comes with wild forks, fatal dead-ends and countless other hazards. Use deadly missiles and weapons, life shortening bombs and high-voltage power-ups for your combat racing pleasure. Shift direction quickly even race back wards for a truly nauseating experience. Replay capability lets you laugh in the face of death over and over again.
Cinematic game show sequences feature Lance and his gorgeous new assistant. Hear Lance's irritating, fast-paced commentary in full 16-bit sound."
Two years after Megarace, Lance Boyle (Christian Erickson) returns to host MegaRace2 again presented in as a virtual Running Man style game show. The game returns with higher resolution full motion video race tracks which are also longer and more varied with alternate routes. Gone are the on track bonuses and power ups and instead we have weapons to fend off other competitors. Weapons are bought with the introduction of money gained by winning races. You don't need to come first in each race but you will have severe monetary issues if you don't.
There are six different tracks played three times over multiple laps. The first two are fully armed racing to weed out the weak racers over five laps and the third race is pure races with no weapons over three laps. There are 14 cars to choose from over the game as you unlock them. however the fastest cars are presented right at the start and the cheapest cars in the game. other cars may have better stats in other areas but are not revealed but cost a lot more. With money being so tight spent on vehicle repairs and weapons, it's not easy to even get enough money together to buy a new car.
The longplay shows all fmv and all six (eighteen) races before showing the game over fmv at the end. The controls on a standard joypad are very sensitive and makes keeping the car straight a challenge of it own. You can be knocked around or take corners too early spinning your vehicle which may take off armour. The first race goes quite badly requiring a costly repair and I try to save money as much as I can to buy a new car later. Weapons don't do much so I don't spend to much on them but the shield is nice to have as its quite cheap and means you don't have to spend to much on car repair.
Overall, the game is much better presented than the first game as you might expect but all the extra bling doesnt make up for the frustrating gameplay. At all times during the racing you and the other racers are all huddled together and the rubber banding makes sure they are near you at all times bashing you or damaging you in order to get ahead. You have to put all your effort into blocking and should they get past you may never be able to catch up as somehow there vehicles are all faster than yours and it ruins what would otherwise be an enjoyable racing game. I think the game might even be robbing me as well with less winnings than expected to cover repairs which makes budgeting for a new car a problem. Lastly, the prize doors after winning the first race of a track are a complete joke with all three doors having the same prize.
Two downloads are available. Because the game uses multiple resolutions I have had to scale to the largest size so that all the parts fit together. The first download maintains the original pixel aspect and the second is fully rendered at a 4/3 corrected aspect which makes the fmv look odd (meant to be wide I think) but the gameplay is correct.
