Player's Review

Released in 2020 as a celebration of Mario's 35th anniversary, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a collection of the first three 3D Mario titles: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.

Super Mario 64:
The game that set the standard for the 3D collect-a-thon. Bowser has taken over Princess Toadstool's (Princess Peach's) castle, and now it's up to Mario to recover the castle, defeat Bowser, and save the princess. There are 15 main courses with a grand total of 120 Power Stars to collect for 100% completion. And that's exactly what I do. I collect every star in every mission, including the 100-coin stars and the castle's hidden stars. Revolutionary for 1996, but kind of dated. Still fun, and I have a lot of respect for this game.

Super Mario Sunshine:
The first time this game has received a re-release since it originally launched on the GameCube in 2002. Princess Peach, Mario, and Toadsworth decide they're overdue for a vacation, so they charter a flight to Isle Delfino, a tropical resort home to some of the most unlikable citizens in the Mario universe. Their power source, the Shine Sprites, have gone missing due to ink being splattered all over the island. Despite Mario literally just arriving, he's convicted for the pollution in a rigged trial where the princess herself is not allowed to speak in his defense. He's ordered to clean up the mess and recover the Shine Sprites, which were actually stolen by Bowser Jr. while posing as Mario. Despite the different premise, it's still a collect-a-thon with 120 Shines to gather, 24 of which are earned by trading in 240 Blue Coins hidden throughout Isle Delfino. Yeah, I collect everything here too: all 120 Shine Sprites and all 240 Blue Coins. It's the most frustrating game in the collection, but it's still a Mario game.

Super Mario Galaxy:
Also seeing a re-release for the first time since 2007. It's the night of the Star Festival, and Princess Peach invites Mario to the castle to celebrate and give him something. However, Bowser appears and decides to take Princess Peach and her castle into outer space. Mario attempts to save her but is left for dead in orbit. He is then rescued by Rosalina, who promises to help him if he can recover her spaceship's power source, the Power Stars, which were stolen by Bowser. And that's the name of the game. Collect more Power Stars, with the occasional Grand Star needed to unlock new areas. This time, there are 242 stars in total to collect, making it the largest completion challenge in the collection. Mario collects the first 120 stars, which unlocks Luigi and another 120 stars. Collecting all 120 stars with both characters unlocks the Grand Finale Galaxy, which yields one final star for each character. As usual, I collect every Star in the game, including all 242 stars with both Mario and Luigi, and I also show off Rosalina's Storybook.
