Player's Review
"Gain Ground became a sensation overnight as the newest Human vs. Android competition. One day, though, the Mother Computer that controlled the androids went crazy and trapped spectators in the Coliseum! Join the group of skilled fighters who are trying to defeat the system, and save those innocent people from a fate worse than death!"
Arcade conversion tot he 8 Bit home console. One or Two players with the interesting aspect of being male and female and all the people you rescue are also split that way for a full male or female team leading the battle against the machines.
At the start of each level you select a character from the roster which has abilities needed to tackle the level. For the first thirty levels you will usually get to rescue at least one soldier by grabbing them and taking them to the exit adding them to your roster. You start with basic soldiers like the spear thrower that is good at killing ground troops, the rifleman that has a good secondary weapon that shoots both sides. Later you will get a grenadier that's good at killing targets on or over walls, bazooka that's good for targeting those on walls at long range, a missile launcher for dealing large damage in front of you and a flame thrower that's good for crowd control. There also a ninja that can lay traps which are good against enemies that shoot back if you shoot at them as well as a wizard that can freeze enemies in their tracks and a Viking with a powerful spear for stronger ground enemies. The basic spearman moves faster though.
Each round contains ten levels with the tenth being a boss battle. Levels can be completed quickly just by killing everything but you wont be able to rescue soldiers doing this. Soldiers in the roster can be considered as lives making it worth while rescuing them. You can also rescue fallen soldiers. Each level has a time bonus if completed in the first 100 seconds. The longplay is by no means optimal and there may be other soldiers who's abilities could have completed levels more quickly.
Overall, it's not a bad conversion tot he Master System and the game is well presented including an ending. The most annoying aspect of the game is cycling through all the soldiers until you get to the one you want. It may be advantageous to sacrifice some that you have too many of or dont use in order to cycle through the roster more quickly.
