Player's Review

"What had begun as a straightforward quest to banish the Shapeshifter Witch and free the good wizard Calypso has become hideously strange. Only this morning I was eaten by an amphibian whose table manners were quite appalling. As if that wasn't a sufficiently inconvenient start to the day, within minutes I was leered at by a rock which refused flatly to say a word. At my wit's end I consulted with a wise owl. In place of a clue be fed me a red herring. It was delicious but landed me in a pickle. Rather than completing my noble quest I found myself settling an industrial dispute between a despotic Troll and a herd of militant goats. My intuition began to tell me that there might be more to this magic forest than meets the eye. Later. I visited the fiery pit of Rondor (open weekdays and bank holidays 10-6) and considered it truly one of the finest of the thousands of sights man or Swampling could ever behold in this queer land. Sightseeing over, I am determined that tomorrow nothing shall distract me from ending my quest and fulfilling my sacred destiny (weather permitting)."

The game firstly released on the PC for Dos in 1993. AdventureSoft went all out for this one releasing for the Amiga 500 on floppy (9) as well as an AGA version for the A1200 and for the CD32 making good use of the extra storage to add full voice acting and being one the CD32s best releases. The floppy game was also HD installable supporting those Amiga owners that upgraded with a hd and extra memory. The CD game supports both mouse and joypad control but does not support subtitles and voice together which could limit your enjoyment if you deaf, blind or both!

For this longplay I am using the joypad controls. It's not as slick as the mouse but I am trying to show what the cd32 experience would be without an additional mouse accessory. The game can feel quite long as there is a lot of walking back and forth between locations. I have tried to solve the game in segments, finding items for the puzzle ahead without trying to solve everything in one go after picking up everything. Not as clean as I would have hoped as I get side tracked and make a few mistakes but nothing that drags the video out.

Overall a looking and playing adventure. It can be a little overwhelming as you have access to so many areas with a lot of walking in between but there is the map to quickly jump between some key locations. The only real problem with the game is the lack of subtitles and the mixing volume as the music and speech fights for your attention. You can turn the music off but it would have been preferable if it just dropped in volume when voices are playing.
