Player's Review
Wipeout XL, released in 1998 for the Sega Saturn only in JP region as PlayStation had an exclusive deal for the US region. (Wipeout 2097 was of course released in EU region for both PS1 and Saturn). The Saturn version of the game was converted by Tantalus Entertainment and published by Perfect Entertainment.
The conversion was less than perfect though as it runs at half the framerate of the PS1 original making the game more difficult as you end up over compensating in the corners due to the frame lag especially if like me, you are used to the ps1 or even the pc/Amiga versions of the game. The presentation is also different in that there is no Red Bull branding in the Saturn games and also no licenced soundtrack. Also note that the credit sequence is not shown for completing the championship modes. In order to see them you need to let the demo mode play out a couple of times. I tag the credit sequence onto the end of the video.
One notable improvement though is the loading screen as it transitions between the menus and the race track. Much more presentable than the hard cut the other versions of the game have. In the longplay I show playing though all 8 tracks and the two championships using all 4 craft. At the end I show a single race at phantom speed with the piranha craft just to show the game and final craft as fast as it can go.
