Player's Review

Earliest version of the very first Rayman game, before it was refined for all versions after this one, including the DSiWare and mobile re-releases.

Plot: 'In the planet in which Rayman lives, people are harmonious thanks to the Great Protoon. However, the evil Mr. Dark steals the Protoon, causing the Electoons, tiny beings that maintain harmony on Rayman's planet, to scatter all over the world. Betilla the Fairy, a guardian of the Great Protoon, battles Mr. Dark to get back the Protoon and Electoons, but fails, so Rayman decides to go and find the Electoons, free the Great Protoon and defeat Mr. Dark.'

To expand on the differences compared to later releases of this game on more powerful consoles, one noticeable difference is that Joe does not give the player a firefly, meaning there is no 'completely pitch dark' section after that scene, a few sections were not included, the final world is completely different from what is seen in later versions, though it features a hidden breakout minigame that is exclusive to the Jaguar release (see timecodes for reference). This code is given out at the flying stage after the first encounter with Moskito and also at the end of credits.

I start off the longplay by completing the first four stages in order to acquire the abilities to punch, hang onto edges of platforms and also to swing from pink rings, after getting all of them I revisit three of these levels to rescue a few Electoons that were unreachable before. The next set of stages is done in just one visit, one of the Electoon cages in Bongo Hills normally requires the helicopter ability but it can be broken without it (this requires a good amount of practice and patience). Saving all Electoons in all 17 stages unlocks the final world and level where you fight Mr. Dark at the end. This fight seems to be easier to finish at least in this version, since he has half of health points, 12 to be exact, compared to 24 in other versions. After completing the game I show off the breakout minigame and also secret developer messages, one of them is impossible to show in its entirety because the attract mode is triggered after a certain amount of time, even if no gamepad buttons are pressed.
