Player's Review
"Evilution: Far from earth, the UAC recommenced their experiments on one of the moons of Jupiter. A spaceship, mistaken for XXX a supply vessel on radar, hovered above the base. Hideous demons poured out, blanketing the base with death. All your comrades were quickly slaughtered or zombified. This time, it's not about survival. It's about revenge.
The Plutonia Experiment: Every effort has been made by the nation's top scientists to close the seven interdimensional Gates of Hell, but one XXX portal remains open. Alone, you must infiltrate the ravaged complex, defeat the demon Gatekeeper and seal the last Hellhole before the undead are prepared to, once again, take over the world."
Intended as a continuation of Doom II, final doom introduced Two new 32 levels episodes to play through. These were notably more difficult than either the previous two games and 'The Plutonia Experiment' being considerably more punishing. The game featured larger maps with many more enemies to fend off. Due to limitation of the PlayStation console, these large new maps would not work so only a few of the levels from the each episode are included here and even these have been cut down a little with fewer monsters. Speaking of which, the EU release does erroneously advertise the game as having both 32 level episodes on the back of the case. To add more content, some of the Doom II Master Levels have been added to offer a total of thirty levels even though these are not mentioned on the back of the box. It only when you read the inside cover "The Master Levels: id Software recruited the Internet's most devious level designers to produce 13 levels of pure mayhem."
The PlayStation game plays a bit slower than the previous Doom release due to level complexity but as a bonus, mouse support was added. Other than that, the game shares the same enhancements, controls and gameplay of the previous Doom release. The longplay aims for showing 100% secret areas even though the game never tells you when you have found one so you have to hope you hit the trigger for it to be counted. I do try to show as much of the map as possible killing everything but its not always 100% as enemies can wander or not even spawn in.
I'm not a huge fan of the master levels as they as they are all quite long although quite varied. Some of the map designers really like to make fortification type levels. I do like the TNT levels as they all seem to follow a theme and introduced new music and gfx so it actually feels like a new episode in the doom saga. Not a fan of the Plutonia Experiment. Maze like levels full of traps and go on a while and didn't introduce anything new. Some annoyingly difficult levels even on the easiest difficulty and the challenge is on right from the first level. It certainly helps that the PlayStation game allows you to carry over weapons from the previous episode.
