Player's Review
"FOLLOW-UP TO LAST YEAR'S NO.1 HIT "OPERATION WOLF" NOW WITH TWICE THE ACTION.. TWICE THE FUN... TWICE THE CHALLENGE
Bringing you enhanced shoot em up action for one or two players, Thunderbolt not only reproduces the horizontally-scrolling gameplay of Wolf, but adds 3D action to the scenario as you test your nerve against swooping jets, helicopters, tanks and many more awesome adversaries! Use the laser sight, or the bulletproof vest, but watch out for those air-to-ground missiles!"
Another Taito arcade conversion from Ocean Software that was released on all the 8/16-Bit major Home Computers of the time. Operation Wolf on the Amiga was a good effort let down mostly by collision detection issues. Operation Thunderbolt however is a much more polished affair. some Great gfx, sound effects and voice clips.
What makes this game a little different is that we have no targeting reticule much like the arcade game with it's light gun didn't need one. Apparently being able to see where you are aiming makes this kind of game too easy. Its not enough to have more enemies on screen than you can shoot at bleeding away your energy but you have to keep an eye on where your shots are hitting at least until you collect a laser sight power up.
There are three main types of gameplay. Running forward into the enemies, walking sideways across enemies and riding in a vehicle into enemies. When you get tho the enemy camps you have the option to save hostages for score. It doesnt really effect the ending like the previous game. you either make it home or you don't! Killing the pilot just leads to normal game over. One thing to note is that the enemy can only hit you when firing from your side of the screen. going after everything will cost you ammo and cause you problems so unless you are score chasing its best to leave opposite side alone and conserve your ammo.
After completing the game I show Speccy Mode which is essentially Hard mode as the screen fills up with enemies faster than you can take them down. Keeping a firm eye on where your shooting is challenging enough but you will be chewing through ammo faster than you can replenish it as well. I wanted to last long enough to show the three main stage types and left it there. You get two continues and then it's game over.
