Player's Review
"The strange mutant creatures have returned! Only this time they are tougher than ever! Earth once again needs a hero to stop them... one like you! So strap into your fighter and blast off to end this infestation one and for all!"
Zeta Wing Returns in a sequel that again raises your expectations of what a vertical scrolling shoot em up on the C64 should be. Whilst initially it looks more of the same, there are some new effects going on like the way enemies appear to be flying upwards to you and we now have the addition of spart bombs to clear the screen in sticky situations.
The game again takes place over seven stages featuring music and sfx at the same time. The powerup system now has us collecting stars to charge up the weapon and you only have to collect nine instead of twelve to power up to the next weapon. Each level has an end stage boss made of large sprites filling the game with bullets to avoid and most of them are multi stage so you have to watch out from falling armour as you work through the stages.
Overall, another good shoot em up for the C64. Enemy dire is easy to see with large flashy bullets but the collision detection can feel suspect at times sometimes in your favour and other not so much. Being shot down results in your weapon losing a level and extra lives can be earned every 50,000 points. The letters can be shot for score bonuses.
