"NOTHING, NOTHING CAN PREPARE YOU!
The fierce kombatants of the #1 arcade smash gather for Mortal Kombat® II, a battle to defeat the shape-shifting demon Shang Tsung and his ruthless master, Shao Kahn." Brutal special moves, hidden surprises, and outrageous finishing moves -- ALL yours to kommand. Let the Kombat Kontinue..."
The Game gear game is massively cut down compared to the original arcade game and the 16 bit home systems and maybe even less than the game boy version (no babaliities). You get to choose from eight fighters each with there own moves and finishing moves. You only get three or four special moves and only one fatality. as well as the uppercut spike finisher which is the same button combination for all fighters. I don't think there is a pit to knock opponents into.
The controls are a bit of a pain. Button 1 to punch, 2 to kick and start to block. These are fine on there own but when combinations of all three are needed for a special move and especially a fatality as you only get a split second to do the input (hold block, Down, Down, up, Button 2, release block), it saps what little enjoyment there is out out of it as you struggle to pull out the move you want. Some moves even seem to get blocked if the opponent is doing a similar move.
The longplay firstly goes through Hard mode as Shang Tsung with the intention of showing fatalities from other characters although i don't get to show them all. I missed smoke but did fight against jade by only using kicks in the round before the mystery fight (No Blocks or punches or fatalities). Not that it adds anything as there is no scoring in this version so going out of your way to find them only prolongs the pain. The game got crazy hard by the time you fight Shang Tsung often overriding any move you care to make. Upon completion I show a second play on easy with the intend to show Smoke that I missed in the first run. You only get a split second to press Down+Start when Toasty appears and he only seems to appear in the first round. I also show the Spike uppercut that I didn't get to work in the first run.
Overall this a god awful conversion of the original arcade game existing purely to exist. Its mostly the same as the Master system version but with a much smaller play area making it difficult to get a gap between you and the opponent to avoid projectiles. The sound/music is horrifically bad. There's just too much missing to make this worth playing.
