Player's Review
"When the forces of General Kibaba and Carlos Ortega unite then the prospect of rampant terrorism and corruption is not only frightening.. it may be unstoppable! Military intervention is now the only effective means by which you can thwart their plans. Jungle Strike throws you deep into a campaign to defeat these enemies of the free world. Desert Strike was just a warm-up, in Jungle Strike things get really hot."
Like Desert Strike the game is split into missions each with multiple objectives. It's you and your helicopter vs the Generals army. As you fly around targeting the objectives there will also be numerous enemies to encounter along the way which you can usually safely ignore saving valuable ammo or take them out for extra points an occasionally a bonus item drop. Extra fuel, armour and ammo are usually scattered around should you need them with some being hidden in structures that need to be destroyed. These can usually found on your map so not to much guesswork involved. Armour can also be obtained by taking enemy prisoners to the nearest drop off point.
The longplay plays through all missions sequentially completing them in order. This isn't optimal as far as time goes but it does make things easier as the enemies don't like you jumping ahead, moving quicker and hitting harder. I also show each mission description as I do them. Where as the Amiga version of Desert Strike pulled out all the stops to make it the best version of the game with expanded graphics and utilising extra memory for sound effects. Jungle Strike comes across as a minimal effort to convert the Mega-Drive game missing many graphic elements and nothing utilising the Amiga specific hardware features. Even the controls are cut back with no way to jink the helicopter making it difficult to avoid some weapons fire or look like a pro pilot. Not to be over negative as it is overall well presented and keeps all the core parts of the game it is based on. Just a bit of a let down after Desert Strike.
Differences compared with the A500 version are minor but most notably the A1200 game uses more of the available screen for gameplay. The A1200 game also has a more colourful title screen as well as an intro sequence. If you have a 2mb A500/600 the A1200 game will actually work but you get a blank title screen (as it cant display the only AGA image in the game).
Overall, whilst not the worst conversion, the game does seem to start lacking content near the end compared against other versions, although like other conversions, it is missing the ending credits entirely.
