Quik the Thunder Rabbit

Quik the Thunder Rabbit. Developed by Stywok Games and published by Titus Software in 1994. I'm not sure if it was released standalone at retail (on cd) but it was published on the cover of CD32 Special Issue 2 in April 1995.

"No time for fun, the carrot-locker is empty! The rabbit tribe of the Angels Meadow is in great danger, predators are ready to attack. Only one solution: find the Ultimate Seed. It's a magical seed that can produce as many carrots as anyone could ever want, for eternity. But the Ultimate Seed belongs to Quok the good sorcerer, who lives thousands of miles away from the village. It's an emergency Only one rabbit can get this seed back, the quickest rabbit of the Angels Meadow, QUIK, The Thunder Rabbit...

I first played this game on my Amiga when the game was published as a cover disc game on Amiga Action Magazine (Aug 95 - Issue 73). It was split over two issues and if I recall right the only way to continue was via a level password which was handy as the two issues were a month apart. The floppy game runs on both A500 and A1200 and makes use of the enhanced AGA chipset if found to have more detailed backgrounds. Interesting the the CD32 was also a coverdisk mount and is mostly the same as the A1200 AGA game but with a completely different and longer intro sequence. The game makes no use of cd audio. You do get separate jump and roll buttons though and faster loading.

The game is a cartoon style platformer that imitates similar games found on the consoles of the era. It's not perfect by any means but it is well produced, looks good, plays ok but I think it was perhaps to late in for this style of game to make an impact especially on Amiga.

There are four islands with five levels in each plus a further two sub levels. For the main levels you just need to run across the level to the right to reach the exit. Along the way there are some hidden routes that can help or hinder your progress with some having useful pickups including food and water which act as a continuous time limit and need to be constantly refreshed. Most enemies can be destroyed by rolling or jumping on them and they can drop health or food. There is an overall level time limit as well so you cant hang around especially on the harder difficulties. There are also pickups that help you jump higher as well as hi speed run while invincible which can be very useful until you hit a wall. The sub levels are not optional and require you finding a hidden door. In these levels you need to keep jumping upwards whilst avoiding the bird that wants to drag you back down. Collect the clock to leave the level and then make you way to the exit from where you found the door. The fifth level of each area is a labyrinth with a boss battle at the end of it. Nothing to challenging, just last a certain amount of hits to win whilst avoiding it's attacks. Complete all islands to win the game. There is no high score table at the end.

Overall, as already mentioned it is a well made game from Titus software surprisingly. You might expect this type of game from Flair Software. The gfx are nice and detailed, plenty of varied music plus sfx! An animated Intro and Outro and the loading times are very reasonable with no outrageously long empty screens. The gameplay is smooth with a large play area. The only real weak points for me are the controls and some very suspect collision detection especially on enemies you can destroy as you try to jump over them. To be able to attack you have to be moving and there are plenty of the usual euro platformer tropes including platforms you can t see and plenty of death drops.
