Player's Review

"It is a dark time for the TERRAN federation, The evil empire of IRATA and the devilish War- fiends of ZZYAX are attacking all Terran out- posts, including YOURS............ Your task is to co-ordinate the defensive fire of the two powerful PLASMA CANNON, each capable of destroying your enemies or each other! Be warned, You won't find it easy........... LASERZONE is a game which demands your skill and concentration. It includes unique 'move, tilt and fire' control of the two plasma cannons, smart bombs and an attack wave countdown indicator. Have fun."

An early Llamasoft arcade style game which has you controlling two laser turrets on a grid destroying waves of enemies coming from opposite sides. Sounds easy except you have to deal with both the X and Y axis at the same time and it can get hairy with the later waves that move fast. If they reach the wall, you will need a diagonal shot from the opposite wall but be careful as you can destroy your own laser! Occasionally a zapper will appear and take shots at you but is destroyable after a few hits. If the screen gets too crazy, you have a limited amount of zapps to clear the screen and get awarded one for each level complete.

For the longplay I play up to level 20. I don't know how many level there are in total but with 20 in matrix and hell gate it seemed like a fair number to play to here not that the game was going to let me go much further anyway as the enemies were moving too fast by this point. Each level has a set number of enemies to destroy so sometimes it is possible to hold out right up to the last enemy even when the screen has gone mad. The game is also available for the Vic20 and that version seems a bit more playable with smaller enemies giving you a little more time to line them up. The C64 game does have an annoyance where you can be waiting an age before your laser will fire. The version played is the Yaks Progress compilation release which adds a nice loading image and loads many times quicker than the original.

The game also has a two player co-operative mode which is interesting having each player control one laser concentrating on just the enemies coming there way. Probably not much fun when you get hit by diagonal shots from the other player, accidental or otherwise.
