Player's Review

[classic] RPG by Squaresoft.

Follow a story of love, betrayal, and sacrifices around a knight d00d, a bad knight wizard d00d, and some magic rocks. Somewhere in here, there's a spoony bard or something. (translation checks out btw)

This game introduces the ATB system (Active Time Battle) that is then used in a lot of Squaresoft games. Essentially enemies take their turns while you are sitting around trying to navigate menus (unless you play on Wait.) It's also a little unrefined versus other versions of the ATB in later FF games (a character HAS to take their turn. you can't switch characters). I have also learned that only the US SNES FFIV (FFII) had the Active/Wait selection removed but pretty much combined them (as if FFII wasn't butchered enough.) Speaking of: this is THE actual original FFIV with pretty much all of the dummied-out content available (commands and items) and the rough difficulty that spawned an Easy-type release while having a kinda cleaner translation and no censorship/weird name changes (White vs Holy. Nuke vs Flare. Virus vs Bio.) I actually prefer this version over SNES. (or do funny patch things but i digress!)

This longplay casually plays through the game while struggling to stay alive and remained overall slightly underleveled. Most of the game is played on Active (because i'm a crazy person) but Wait is turned for some time. Lots of chests are opened and items are grabbed (IF i can remember them!), even backtracking to Land of Summons and Sylph Caves for the Grimoire item. Lots of battles are fought to try to remain leveled up but in the end, I had to grind at Land of Summons. I do abuse spawnable enemies to try to get some EXP. Developer office is shown while trying to show the encounters. Two trips are made because I couldn't get one mob to spawn so I just advanced the game and took another shot later. I don't go after the Summon drops because drop rate is pathetic. I also don't bother with Pink Tail/Flan Princess because, like the Summon drops, the drop rate is balls and the encounter rate is also balls. ASTERISK!: unless you use an Alert, but even that item isn't widely available. AsTeRiSk: unless you take the time to steal them while they are available!
