"CLASSIC CARS THAT SET THE RULES. PROFESSIONAL DRIVING THAT BREAKS THEM.
GT Racing 97 is here. SUPER SMOOTH 3D RACING across the world in the most PRESTIGIOUS CARS through the most PRESTIGIOUS COUNTRIES. EXCEPTIONAL HANDLING and BREATHTAKING VISUALS are GO!
To take the start of GT Racing 97, you have the choice between 9 dream cars. 9 legendary machines that will take you from the beaches of Brazil to the Egyptian desert, passing through some of the most prestigious locations on the planet. A game with arcade-quality graphics designed for beginners and experts alike. Climb into the classic racing cars and make the tires squeal."
An interesting racing game that plays a little differently to most. Kind of makes me think of Test Drive but with the controls of Hard Drivin'. The game starts out with a high speed intro anim flashing pictures of cars at you before revealing the title screen. Not comparable top the quality of say Need for Speed in terms of presentation. The game has three difficulty levels that effect how fast your car can go and more importantly how it handles and how much damage it can take. To properly complete the game you must play Master difficulty and it's going to be hard going but thankfully you can save between races. After choosing the difficulty you get to choose the car each one having different stats and overall handling and survivability. Each car has it's own dashboard which is a nice touch (Keeping up with NFS and test drive). In order to win and progress you need to come in at least third place.
The longplay shows a playthrough at Master difficulty going through all tracks including extra bonus tracks that I believe only appear in Master mode. The bonus tracks allow you one attempt but your reward is only additional score so I play each track twice and one the third appearance I fail them and move on. These levels are not affected by car upgrades. Speaking of which, between each race as well as being able to save progress you can fix up any car damage you have at the garage as well as buying upgrades or extra cars (lives). The upgrades work like a shield or extra bar so your car doesnt take additional damage until the upgrades have been used up.
Overall, this is a nice arcady racing game but one you have to take your time with. You cant just full throttle to the end as you need to make sure you are taking corners at a safe speed else you will tear the tires apart or risk sliding off the track into a verge or worse, a wall which can result in an instant life lost. The opponents have the same issue so they wont be flying down the track either but they can be annoying when close smashing into you. Race time limit is very very forgiving. The game also has a nice sound track which fits the high sped racing. The ending is a bit basic, like a game from the early nineties which is a bit of a dampener there is no credit roll or even a credit screen.
