Player's Review
"Join MUTT and his incredible adventures in a fabulous CARTOON ANIMATED ADVENTURE. literally stuffed full of action, humour and puzzling conundrums. The sands of time in the underworld trickle slowly and the Grand Council meeting approaches. He who draws the shortest straw must venture forth into the Labyrinth of Chaos to bring back the MYSTIC PIZZA OF PLENTY. Each year from the beginnings of recorded time one has thus ventured forth. None have ever returned. MUTT draws the shortest straw and to cries of "extra pepperoni" and "hold the anchovies" our hero is thrust towards the foreboding entrance of the labyrinth."
Initially released for DOS on PC followed by Philips CDI. The Amiga CD32 version was the last one out of the door and thanks to the cd storage capacity is the full game without compromise including cd audio for music. It wasn't released on floppy for other Amiga models.
The game is fairly simple to play but can feel like a chore. The game is split into five levels. Before each you need to defeat a guardian who is blocking your entry into the tunnels. Controls a little annoying with button and up/toward/down executing a move. Button and away blocks or jumps backwards. Timing is everything but annoyingly the opponent is able to hit you whilst you execute your move. There is no concept of lives and if you take to many hits, the level starts over and this is the same for all the puzzle rooms. In the tunnels you need to explore all corridors and collect all the gold. On the way you fill face puzzle rooms where you need to complete a task to pass through them and venture further into the tunnels. In the tunnels you have an energy bar and there will be plenty of obstacles trying to deplete your energy. Should it run out, it is game over. Completing the puzzle rooms replenishes your energy as does collecting food and resting in the save room. There is also a time limit and you will get captures if it runs out, but unless you are sleeping you have more than enough time.
Most levels have a shop that allows you to spend coins on items you may need to get through the puzzle rooms. Level one especially you need all items. Level 2 you just need the pole axe. Level 4 you don't need any items and buying them seemed to drain energy. regardless on all but the last level, you have to find every scrap of gold before you can exit the level which can be a real drag. The final level is split into sections and falling down a fiery pit transports you to another area. You don't need to worry about gold here after buying the pole axe and watering can from the shop and can just head to the game rooms with the final arena leading to the ending. After exiting the tunnels there is one more guardian to fight off before heading to the next level.
Overall, its a nice game but all the walking and gold collecting can be a real drag as you really just want the next game room. There is a save room in each level but can be quite a long distance if you need to go back to one. The longplay goes through each level in full highlighting the whole map, mostly a necessity as you look for all the gold. I try to show any funny animations and some fails before completing the game rooms properly. At the very end I wait around to show the screensaver showing the devil sleeping and dreaming. if left the screen also darkens. Following game completion I show the game over animation.
